Thematic Start-up Training Series #1: Professional Bookkeeping, Accounting, and Tax Responsibilities

Starting a business (or even a side hustle) is exciting, until messy numbers turn into real stress. To help founders get ahead of that curve, the Centre for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CIE) at The Hang Seng University of Hong Kong (HSUHK) kicked off the Thematic In-Depth Training series of our three-year GBA Youth Start-up and Social Innovation Programme with its first session: "Professional Bookkeeping, Accounting, and Tax Responsibilities". Funded by the Home and Youth Affairs Bureau and the Youth Development Commission, the Programme supports HSUHK students and alumni in turning socially valuable ideas into workable ventures.

Led by Mr Adrian Chong (HKICPA member; former Big Four Audit Manager), the session delivered practical guidance founders can use immediately: how to set up clean bookkeeping from day one, track cash flow and burn rate, and stay on top of Hong Kong tax obligations and deadlines. Adrian also went beyond the finance checklist, connecting accounting choices to basic company law, directors'duties, and how compliance can look from the government's perspective. Clear explanations and vivid scenarios helped the 30+ participants see how small habits now can prevent major clean-ups later.

The workshop's energy came from its hands-on feel. Adrian shared founder-friendly tools, walked through how to use them, and answered a steady stream of questions with patience and clarity.

Big thanks again to Mr Adrian Chong for such a clear, generous, and founder-friendly session, and for giving our teams a confident start to the series.
